CHOICE 03 - Story / Heroines

Sometimes heroines are the subject of the story and every so often the heroine is a secondary character. Some female writers, who were working between 1600 and the early 20th Century had to take men's names as women were either - not expected - to work [as they were rich] / not given an education [since they weren't able to have a profession] or not respected as 'thinkers' become heroines for women's equality.

TASK 01
Which heroine(s) have featured in Latvian literature or through history? What are you able to find out about her / them? [store this material for your production].

TASK 02

[you may need a dictionary for the meanings of some words]

TASK 03 / 04
Here are the audio tracks you need for tasks 3 and 4

TASK 05 - WHICH OF THE HEROINES MOST INTERESTS YOU?

Write a short piece of text [200 words]  highlighting the things about the character that you have selected that makes her interesting in your opinion. Include found or self-created images / videos.

TASK 06 - READ THE TEXT AND THE BIO NOTE ON CHARLOTTE

Produce a table that compares / contrasts Charlotte and her character Jane. Add photos and illustrations to make it attractive and informative.

Play the audio track first then look at task 07 - rewrite the text so that it looks like a play.
For example
Mr Rochester : I'll try to get you a job somewhere else.
Jane : I don't want to go somewhere else!

Write your answer as sentences so that it makes sense on your poster. For example - By the end of the dialogue the relationship between Jane and Edward had become romantic rather than distant and professional.

TASK 09 and 10

Carry out some online and library research about a fictional heroine [or hero] from Latvijan history or fiction. What can you find out about -

  • early life
  • personality and abilities
  • what she or he did
  • what happened to her / him in the end of the story / legend / biography
  • what aspects of the character make you like them / think she  or he is interesting.

ILLUSTRATE YOUR WORK WITH REPRODUCTIONS OF OLD DOCUMENTS / PHOTOS / ILLUSTRATIONS TO GO ON YOUR POSTER [A2 size paper provided]

CHOICE 04 - Nature

Nature and the land or seascape have always inspired people to create - stories, poems or plays, art and music. So why not offer the choice of taking this source of inspiration to you? So we are. You can look into the spectacular and mysterious landscapes of Latvia and draw comparisons with neighboring countries and/or Great Britain.

In the Autumn, when the trees begin to display their red orange and yellow leaves North America's north eastern states give a spectacular display - especially from a high viewing point.

Bill Bryson wrote a book called 'A Short History of Nearly Everything'. In it he makes two observations - all the atoms in our bodies cannot touch each other; there is space between them and since matter cannot be destroyed or created everything we are made of is as old as the Universe - we are just borrowing it.

TASK 01
What wildlife can you find in Latvia? Collect as many examples as you can and then classify each according to the grid shown -
make your grid attractive and visual and easy to read. Or do a presentation with you presenting the data!!

TASK 02

Listen to the audio track to complete the notes for task 02
DC 06 TRACK 11
CD 06 TRACK 12

TASK 03 - use the audio tracks above to complete answer these questions

Write your answer so that it includes a restating of the question so that on the poster it makes sense. For example to answer 1) as They are in the USA - would make no sense as the reader has no idea what question youy are answering - so you would need to write The Appalachians are a range of mountains in northeast America (or USA).

TASK 04
Who is Bill Bryson and why did he and his friend find doing the Appalachian trail a difficult challenge? Have any Latvian writers undertaken similar projects? Walking around the Latvian border for example. Or visiting as many locations as possible to build up a collection of Latvian stories / information.

TASK 05

In order to do this task listen to the audio track provided - here is the drawing

CD 06 TRACK 13

TASK 06

Here is the glossary

HERE IS HOW TO COMPLETE THE POSTER -

A video of Bill Bryson talking about his book about the universe and 4 remarkable facts he has learned

CHIOCE 06 - Poetry - No Man is an Island

Poetry is not a dead artform. There are poets active now. Bob Dylan was said to be a poet as much as he was a singer back in the 60s and in the 80s John Cooper Clarke was the poet of the PUNK ROCK era. He has a very strong regional dialect!!!

One of the most famous poems ever written was by John Donne in the 1600s - it is called No Man is an Island - here are the words -

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee
